- The district around Dunkitt & Kilmacow is a limestone one Limestone is found in abundance all over the neighbourhood Several unused quarries dot the countryside. Some of these are still in use providing stones for steam-rolling the roads.
These quarries were the source of a good deal of employment Quarry-men came into the district from other parts of the country. Special cottages & houses were built for these men who settled down in the district. A special club-house was built for them too. This club-house was afterwards changed into a school-house, two years after National Education commenced in Ireland in the year 1834 & this remained the school of the district until 1931, when a new school was built in the townland of Strang's Mills.
