- Long ago the houses were long low rambling houses. The thatched roof was the most common feature of them and generally they were only one storey. The majority of these were built of lime and sand.
Some of these houses were so small that the kitchen was used as a bedroom, and settle-beds were used. In most of the old houses the fire was situated at the gable wall, and the front of the chimney was made of clay and stone. I various parts of the country the old houses had no windows like nowadays, only a hole in the wall covered over with lettuce wire.
