- In this district the houses were mostly thatched long ago. There was usualy a bed in a comfortable corner of the kitchen called a settle-bed. This was used as a seat during the day and as a bed in the night. The chimney was made of clay and wattles, and the fire was always at the gable end of the house.
Half-doors were very common in this district long ago but they have been modrenized. A rush dipped in tallow was used as a means of giving light at night. The people of this locality made tallow themselves from the fat of meat.
