    and salt were used to make oatmeal cake, while the ingredients of a wholemeal cake were wholemeal flour, soda, butter-milk and salt. The bread was baked everyday. A cross was made on the top of the cake to keep the crust from braking.
    The vessel in which the bread was baked was called a bake-pot or a griddle. In the country when the baker's bread was not so easily procured on special occasions, such as when a visitor was expected a cream cake or a potatoe cake was made.
