- "Terry the Stag".When the Protestants learned of the terrible outrage committed in Drumswords, on their brother orangeman, a number of men marched, fully armed, to Colonel Madden, Hilton Park, Scotshouse, Grandfather of the present Mr Madden, and asked him to back them up in persecuting the Catholics for what they had done. He told them to go home and leave down their arms, for if any one of them touched a hair on (the Catholics) their heads, he would adorn every tree in the country with their bodies, that it was one of the own creed who did the deed. It was later told that this man died a Catholic.
The trial of the twenty men lasted two days in Monaghan. There was a jury of forty men, and after every witness was examined, they were found "not guilty".
