- In the olden days candles were made from the fat of cattle and sheep. Those candles were called tallow candles. When they got the fat they would put it into a big boiler with a fire in under it, and it would render down.
Then they would get three pieces of real thin cord and plait it. That done they would dip the plaited cords in the tallow and the tallow would stick around the cords. Then they would even the tallow around the cords and hang it out to get firm.
