  1. The old houses were made of mud. The roofs were made of thatch. The thatch was procured from the straw which was left after threshing. The old houses had a bed in the kitchen. It was placed in the corner, it was called a settle bed. The fire was always at the gable wall.The front of the chimney was made of mortar, The people used to build up the windows and make one small window in every room with about two panes of glass in it.The old floors were made of stone.Half doors were common formerly. Turf and scraws were generally used for the fire. Candles and rush lights were used at night for lights. Rush lights were made locally, in the following way. A rush was peeled, and dipped into hot fat and allowed dry.
