- Fairy Forts
There are many raths in the school district. They are called "Raths". There are 6 in the townland of Graigue. All are within view of one another. Three of these raths are in Collier's Farm, one called the "Big Rath" situated on Graigue Hill, one called the "Rocky Rath" one field away from it, and the "Little Rath" situated in the same field as the Big Rath. Another is in Holohan's field adjoining Colliers and there is supposed to be a cave underneath. The remaining two are in Toole's? and Fitzpatricks. All these raths are adjoining farms. The rath in Tooles? was known to have an underground passage as the next field was being ploughed and the flagstones were buried, so they left it untilled. They are all circular in shape. There is a round fence of earth around each and a deep "grife"? all round the mound. On the top of each mound is a circle of ancient looking whitethorn bushes. Fairy people are supposed to live in them.
The owners of the lands never interfere with these lands when ploughing.
