- Basket Making.
People make baskets for carrying potatoes and turf. There are many different ways of making baskets. First the rods have to be cut off the ditches, and left in a dry place for about one month. A basket is generally made with sally or hazel rods.
First get a fairly large tub and put a rope around it. Then get fourteen fairly strong rods and put them between the rope and the tub and tie them on the top with a piece of twine. Then work two rods together to form the binding. Then plat the rods in and out between the standards. After about a foot form another binding. Then work one rod in and out between the standards. Then take off the twine and twist the standards from all sides to form the bottom. Then take the basket off of the tub and bend them down into the binding. Then take four rods and heat them over a fire. Then put one rod down at the right-hand side and another at the left-hand side. Then plat them together to form a handle. Then do the same at the far side to form the second handle. When that is finished the basket is made complete. After the basket is left to season before it is used.
