    It was one of the Monks of Lough Key too that founded the famous Boyle Abbey in the twelfth century.
    The "Annals of Lough Key" was compiled in these islands and the Mac Dermotts of the Rock Castle were its custodians for many a hundred years.
    There are some gruesome tales of fights on this island that perhaps have never found their way to the written history of this country and perhaps it is well they did not.
