told. Oisín raised it and said this must be February oats because it is very heavy. The girt of his saddle broke, he fell to the ground and immediately became an old withered man. The horse went off and was never heard of again. Oisín remained in the district for some time. It is said that he helped Saint Patrick to build a small Church in Elphin by drawing timber to it. Saint Patrick converted him to the true faith and he died in the district.
    (2) One time a Scottish giant came to Fionn when he was encamping in "sliat in iarann" mountain. The Scottish giant challenged him to a bout in stone-throwing. The giant raised a great stone and with great force heaved it across the Roscommon plain and it fell at the back of Elphin. Fionn then raised a stone equally as big as the giants and with great vigour threw it in the same direction as the giant. Fionn's stone fell some yards farther than the giant's. It fell in the street. This stone was to be seen in the street up to recent times when it was removed to facilitate traffic.
