- Local Fairs and Markets
Fair are held in the towns nearly every. The nearest town to me is Ballaghadereen there is a fair held in it every month. The principal fairs are on May Day, November Day and the twenty fifth of March. Pigs are sold on one day and cattle sheep and horses on the next day. When the cattle are sold there is mark put on them to show that the are bought and there is a toll paid on them three pence on a calf and six pence on a cow.
When the buyer pays for the animal he gets what is called luck's money. This amount depends on the price of the animal or how the bargain was made. If a farmer has a big number of cattle between twenty and thirty the buyer sometimes comes out to the field(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
