- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)The master had a box and he had a number of quills in it. Each pupil got a quill to do his English writing. Then the quills were gathered and the pupils used slates for their Arithmetic exercises. There were a few seats and the pupils who knew their lessons well were allowed to sit down. There was not any blackboard in the hedge -school but the master wrote on a big slate.
There was a hedge-school in Tiernan's garden in Ballindrimbley long ago. The teacher was William McGallagher. He lodged in McCabe's house in Ballindrimbley. This hedge-school was much the same as the Cloonarrow one. The master was paid a small sum of money by each pupil. Some of them paid him by doing work for him and others brought him butter, milk, and vegetables. Mrs. Mulligan of Cloonarrow attended this school.
There was a hedge-school in Arm, Castlerea. Harry Young was the teacher.
