- In olden times bread was made in a lot of different ways to which it is made now.
They had oaten, wheaten, rye, barley, potato, and boxty bread. Oaten bread was made oaten meal, water and salt mixed together and standing against a support. Wheaten meal was mixed with flour and baked in the ordinary way.
Rye and barley bread was made in the same way as oaten, potato bread was made of boiled potatoes mixed with flour. Boxty bread was made of raw and boiled potatoes mixed with flour.
A rhyme was made about the bread which was as follows:-
Rye bread will do you good,
Barley bread will do you no harm,
Wheaten bread will sweeten your blood,
And oaten bread will strengthen your arm.- Faisnéiseoir
