   After a couple of hours he sallied out again to see his calves but he could see no trace of them. He thought he heard the calves lowing down near the forth. He went down but when there he could see no trace of them. He searched every field and drain on the farm, but could not find them anywhere.
   He came back again to the top of the hill. Then he thought he heard a splash in the waters below in the reeds which were growing round the lake. Then he thought to himself they have broken away and they got into the lake and they would be drowned.
   Down he went to the water's edge. He had to take off boots, socks and trousers. He ploughed into where he thought he heard the splash. When he was in one place the splash was in another. He kept on following the splash in the water until he was well fagged out.
