- Upon St. Brigid's night 2nd February, a small cross made of wheaten or oaten straw, of a peculiar form is made by the peasantry and stuck somewhere in the roof, particularly in the angles and rafters and over the doors. The cross is something like a Maltese cross. As a new crossogue is set up every anniversary of St. Brigid and carefully preserved they help to tell the age of the house.
The cross is supposed to keep away evil spirits and safeguard the house against fire.
In some places young girls dress up as 'Breegeogues' brídéogs and go from house to house displaying the crossogues.
