- When John Keohane who was one of the oldest fishermen in the town, was fishing off the coast of Whiddy Island, he caught in his net a peculiar fish. He was alarmed at its strange appearance as he had never seen the likes before.
He made for the Bantry pier as quickly as possible, where he joined some other fishermen. He told them of his strange catch. After a lengthy discussion they came to the conclusion that it was a sea-horse.
Its head resembled the head of a pig, and it had a round slender body measuring three feet, it had a small fin on its back, and it had a long round tail which helped it to swim.- Collector
