Irish people were always fond of learning. Hundreds of years ago though the majority of the people could neither read nor write they had learning of another kind. They took the greatest delight in reciting poetry, historical tales, and legends. In later times this desire for knowledge still lived in Ireland. When the Penal laws forbad Catholics to have schools of their own hedge schools were established so that Catholic children might not have to seek learning in Protestant schools.
In Curragh, in the parish of Fuerty, one of these schools was taught by
