Spades are bought in the shops. This is the drawing of the local spade
    [drawing of a spade]
The first thing done to the potatoes during the Summer months is, they are howed. Then they are moulded with the plough, and then sprayed three times. The first spraying is done about the 24th of June. They are sprayed with a mixture of 8 lbs of Sulphate of Copper and 10 lbs of washing soda dissolved in 40 gallons of water.
The potatoes that grow best in this district: Kerr Pink. The Aran Banner is a heavy crop but not as good a table variety as the Kerr Pink.
