- The fairs were held in Ballinasloe always. They are not remembered to have taken place locally. Jobbers never came to the houses to buy the stock. But butchers often came between the time of fairs when they wouldn't have enough of meat.
The fairs are held on the fair green and on the streets also. Pigs are sold on the streets, sheep and cattle are sold on the fair green.
The person that buys the stock pays the toll or custom. Three or four pence on cattle and one penny on sheep and pigs. This money is gathered by a man on each end of the town and the money goes to Lord Clancarty.
Luck money is given also. The man that sells the stock that gives the luck money. One shilling or two or three , are given.
