A "Fathom", in common use among sea-men or fishermen is the length of rope &c. covered from the top of the long finger of one hand to that of the other with the arms fully extended.
Women measure cloth &c by the finger - i.e. the long finger: eight fingers make a yard. Another "yard" measure is - hold the cloth under the right ear with the left hand & stretch the right arm downwards along the cloth as far as it will go.
