- About one hundred and fifty years ago there were no National schools in Ireland. The teachers were obliged to look for dwelling houses, old sheds and barns to teach the children. In some places they were unable to get any place at all so they had to hold their school out under the hedge in the field and that is the reason they were called Hedge-schools.
There was a school held in Clonown. It was an old barn. All the children from round the school attended it. The school-masters name was Thomas Shine. There means of writing was a pointed quill they also used slates and pencils.
The teachers were paid by means of a sum of money levied on the parents of the children attending school.- Bailitheoir
