If a person were suffering from a toothache the same day was to get a frog and one of its legs in his mouth and a toothache would never again be got by the same person. To throw a cat in a graveyard is another remedy for the same ailment. To drink the milk left over after a ferret is a cure for the whooping cough, or to go three times under a donkey's legs.
The neuralgia the cure known locally is to break a black bottle, boil it with whiskey and rub it to the injured part. The root of a hemlock roasted and pounded into the powder and applied as a poultice to a boil cures it. An an "askelora" licked three times cures a burn. A green flag rubbed nine days in succession against an abyss or gathering heals it if the person prayers while doing so.
In Durrus eighty years ago there was doctor named Mac Carthy Cruaidh who was blind and he was able to cure any ailment. People came to him on horse back and he was always able to supply them with a cure. Near the village of Durrus there was a herb garden and the herbs were supposed to cure every ailment.
