- In this district potatoes are usually planted in ridges. It is said that sounder and better potatoes are got out of ridges than out of drills. If the weather permits the main crop is sown from the end of February to the middle of March. The potatoes are usually planted in a grazing field.
The manure is first drawn out and scattered evenly over the field. The field is then ploughed into ridges about four feet wide. The ridges are then well hacked with an adze-like implement called a "griffaun"
The potatoes intended for planting are cut into pieces, each piece having two or more eyes. These pieces are then planted in the following manner: The spade is driven into the ground, the handle is shoved forward, and the seed is dropped into the hole behind the spade.
