- There was a family of the O Mahonys living at Crookhaven about eighty years ago. They were very powerful oarsmen. They won every big boat-race in any place along the coast from Cove to Berehaven.
One of them was a very powerful swimmer. On one occasion there was a ship wrecked at the Mizen Head and the sea was strewn with the wreckage, barrels of rum, bales of cotton etc. There was a terrible sea at the time and no boat could remain on it. One of the O Mahonys swam out on the raging sea and saved most of the wreckage by rolling it in before him to land.
