- Local cures are now almost out of existence with the present generation, but some of them are often more successful than medical cures.
For example a fox's tongue is one of the best cures for healing a bad cut, a boil, and for drawing a needle or a thorn out of the flesh. If a child has the whooping cough, swing it nine times under a donkey and it is made alright. Nettles are used as a cure for rheumatism.
A very old and good cure for 'wild fire' was to write the name in pen and ink on it, to heal it, and prevent it from spreading. When a person has a bad toothache if a frog is put into the mouth, it is supposed to stop the pain. If you had a sore throat put the stocking you had been wearing all day, around your neck, for the night, and this will cure it.
Snow is a cure for chilblains. Penny leaves are used as a cure for corns. If the dog licked a sore hand or leg this would heal it. Treacle and soap are a cure for a burn. Butter-milk is a remedy for a bad stomach. Toast-water is a cure for vomiting. Paraffin oil, and lard, dissolved in the oil, is a cure for pneumonia.- Bailitheoir
