    In the year 1870 a schooner called the Yellow Branch sailed from Courtmacsherry bound for Newport for a cargo of coal.

    In the year 1870 a schooner called the Yellow Branch sailed from Courtmacsherry bound for Newport for a cargo of coal.
    She carried a crew of five men including Captain John Travers who was also the owner of the vessel.
    The captain had some difficulty in getting a crew as they claimed the vessel was unseaworthy. The schooner was insured for £300.
    About two hours after sailing some fishermen from Barrys Point observed a schooner about two miles south east of Horse Rock flying distress signals. The fishermen manned a rowing boat and pulled away to give assistance. The sea was quite calm.
    When they arrived on the scene they discovered it was the Yellow Branch which was sinking rapidly.
    The crew got away in the ships boat. About an hour later the vessel sank in about twnety fathoms of water.
    The crew got back safely to Courtmacsherry and got a good reception.
    The sinking of the schooner was no surprise as it was obsolete and it was suggested
