- Between the years 1870 and 1880 the principal food for country people was potatoes, fish, and milk and this class of food was used three times daily. The tables were placed in the centre of the kitchen floor and were covered by a piece of sacking and the potatoes were placed on this cloth. The fish that was used with the potatoes was hake, bream, and mackerel which were caught in large numbers in these days. When the potatoes got scarce there was another food used three times daily known as stirabout. This food consisted of ground Indian corn and was boiled in water for forty five minutes. When cooked it was placed in large dishes on the table and when cold enough it could be used with milk and if milk could not be had sugar could be used as a substitute. There was very little bread and tea used in the country in these days especially by the poorer class.
