  1. The townland of Dunowen
    There is a townland in the parish of Ardfield called Dunowen. It derived its name from a chieftain called Owen who owned a fort on a peninsula about a quarter mile south of the Red Strand. Before Brian Boru's time danes built all these forts and when Owen came he captured them and he built a castle near the fort south of the strand. Owen was a smuggler and he smuggled wine, brandy, tobacco and silk. When Owen took the forts a fierce battle was fought between him and the danes. Some of the remains of the soldiers who
