The soldiers searched the surroundings but failed to find the priest. Guards were placed along the quays and at all outlets from the town. This continued until the second evening after the escape of the priest. A few hours later in the darkness of the night John Heard had the priest conveyed on a car from his house to a place of refuge in West Cork. John Heard became very prosperous after this incident. He lived until the year 1742.
