- (continued from previous page)Potatoes are grown plentifully in this district. There is an average of two acres of potatoes grown in every farm. The Ground is first ploughed, then harrowed and then rolled. This work is done twice so as to make the Ground level. Potatoes are sown in ridges and drills. Ploughs are used and spades are also used. Neighbours help in setting the potatoes by spreading the "sgeachláns". When potatoes are set they are two or three times wed. Neigbours also help to pick them. The following are the types of potatoes best grown in the district:- British Queens, Irish Queens, Cerpinks, Arian banners and Arian chiefs. Potatoes were used instead of Starch.
