- Superstition and Pishogues
Much of the superstition that we usually associate with old people or with past generations is still as strong as ever, particularly with the people in country districts.
In the locality some old beliefs still hold sway and one of these is that when an addition is being put to a house it should not be added at the west side of the existing building. It is regarded as unlucky to attempt to put an addition at the west side. and the following happening illustrates this:-
Some years ago a man named Kirke, of Kilclooney, Kildorrery, Co. Cork, decided to build an extra room at the west end of his house, as none of the other three sides was suitable. He procured the necessary materials, stones, mortar, etc and measured off the new foundations. When everything was ready the building was started. The work proceeded until the walls were a couple of feet high. The workmen left off after their days work, and everything was normal, but the following morning the partially built walls were found levelled to the ground.. There was consternation and anger at this but the workmen proceeded to rebuild the wall. The following morning it was found levelled again. It was rebuilt and a watch set on the third night(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
