- Long ago all the houses of my district were thatched. The walls were made of mud and the roof of straight strong sticks. When the roof was put on the house big sods of earth were spread over the rafters and the taobháin's. Wheaten straw or oaten straw was used as thatch and sometimes heather was used. The floor and chimney of every house were made of mud. There was a half-door in every house in olden times and they are in most of the houses still. Almost all the women of my district used make candles in former years. These candles were called "dips". The fat of the cow or sheep was melted in a pot which was hung over the fire. Then a piece of twine nine or ten inches long was dipped in the pot. When the twine was taken out it was left dry for about five minutes. Then it was dipped in again and so on until it was finished.
