The people died by the ditches. They used eat cornkale, Indian meal and ground barley. Ruins of houses from the Famine times are still to be seen and in Cnochán Rua (Ardrath) the remains of the pits are to be found to this day.
The potatoes decayed in the pits. Seed for the following year came from the Government.
A great fever followed the hunger.
