    the Reformation Protestantism was widely introduced.
    In 1599 this district was harried by Hugh O'Neill
    In 1641 the town of Rathcormac was burned in that Rebellion. Cromwell's soldiers harried the district and stormed Shanbally Castle 1649. It was defended by Redmond Barry. The defenders were betrayed by a brogue-maker who was afterwards hanged by the Cromwellians as a reward for his treachery.
    In 1790 John Phipot Curran father of Sarah Curran the betrothed of Robert Emmet was M.P. for Rathcormac from 1790 - 1797. He was a native of Newmarket. In 1797 the town of Fermoy was founded.
