Those who were not very bad were removed to the north of the river Bride in the Glenville district. The men who were dying or seriously wounded they had to leave to their supporters around the Killshanan now Watergrasshill district. To this day the name of O Keeffe is to be found in large numbers along the route taken by the O Keeffe Clan when returning from this battle. Probably the wounded men remained in the districts in which they were restored to health.
One of those wounded men, a nephew of the Chief "Daniel O Keeffe" remained in Kilshanan district and from [?] the O Keeffe's of Coolequane were descended This family is now extinct in name, though several families at present in Watergrasshill can claim kinship to Daniel O Keeffe the hero of Ballinacleithe and we still find the name Daniel prominent in these families. A few days after the battle a large force arrived from Youghal and laid waste a big tract of the country around Ballinacleithe. The dead bodies of those who fell in the fight were left unburied for some days. Finally the country people around the district got together and buried them in a deep ravine. The bodies were supposed to have been thrown into this ravine until it was filled with them.
