1. Irish in Schools (ar lean)

   tells us that the teachers flogged the children and even young men if they spoke Irish within the school walls. These teachers impressed on the scholars to ignore their parents (because they spoke Irish) and look upon them as ignorant. Irish was branded at that time as a sign of ignorance, and the idea was in the minds of the youth down to the founding of the Gaelic league. The youth looked upon Irish with hatred and disliked those who spoke it. If the reverse process was adopted now, would not those who spoke English feel ashamed to be constantly using it and make an attempt to use a little Irish. The young would help them in their efforts. That end can be attained by forming societies and establishing Folk schools in every National school for the Teaching of Irish and Irish Culture to all our grown people in the evenings.

   The Church is also a great drawback to the language especially in the country. The prayers before and after Mass should be said in Irish and in the evenings The Rosary should be recited in Irish.
