Aged 78. - It is said that an enchanted eel lived in a lake near a small grave yard near Dunkettle. It was a great terror to the people. It killed sheep and cattle. One morning a man got up very and went towards the grave yard. He had a reaping hook. When he drew near it he saw the eel. He struck it with the hook and cut off its tail. It followed him and nearly caught him. He escaped however. He went home and he was buried in the grave yard three days later. A head stone with an eel and a reaping still marks his grave. It was the custom to light a bonfire and to dance around it on Saint John's Night. The remains of the fire were put in the gardens to keep the blight away.
