- Years ago all the old people and fishermen made their own boats, numbers of them together on the seashore. They worked without any plans or designs. Their tools chiefly consisted of a saw, hammer and hatchet. Their work though very rough and ready their boats were sea worthy and in a storm they were manageable. Those boats were generally used for shrimping and fishing. The larger boats which they built were called "Hookers" as they carried two or three men and fished with trawels. They were powered by sails.
Those old were always looking forward to the wreck of ships on the sea coast which were numerous in those days. Being all timber ships the fishermen brought home large quantities of salvaged wood to build their fishing boats as the native elm and oak was very hard to cut up into planks and timbers and then it did not give the return which the seasoned wrecked timber gave. Even at times this wreck timber would be a century old.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
