- Terry Gleeson Told by Mr. Gleeson. Aged 60A Story of the Treasure at Cahermone CastleNot far from the town of Midleton there stands the ruins of Cahermone Castle. The four main walls of the castle are still standing although the roof has long since fallen in. there is a belief among the local inhabitants that under the castle there lies vast hidden wealth. This legend has been handed down from father to son since the famine 1846. Some of the people are inclined to think that this wealth was buried by the people rather than give it to the English soldiers. Then the people of Midleton came to dig for the treasure but they found out that it was useless so they gave it up. There is also a belief that there is an underground passage from Cahermone Castle to Jackson’s Castle in Bally Annon wood. Then the treasure hunters tried to locate the passage (to) at Jackson’s Castle so that they would be able to come out under the castle at Cahermone. But without result.
