The stars were shining bright on the hamlet oer the way,
A while I lingered near as to my listening ear,
Came the anvils notes so clear from the forge at Knockmonlea.

The houses on the hill from whence you'd see the bay,
Oer looking vale and rill and yon castle old and grey,
The beauty of the night the pale moons mellow light,
All give my heart delight as I sauntered on my way.

The dreams of other years when we were young and gay,
Our hopes aye and our fear at the forge of Knockmonlea,
The Ponsoby campaign against the landlords reign
Was fought in galliant strain by the men of Knockmonlea.
IV
Within the prison cell for many a weary day
And cheerless night as well lay the men of Knockmonlea,
How at length was won the fight by a banded peoples right,
Has been told on many a night round the forge at Knockmonlea.

When at Youghal Plunket fell in Spensers far-off-day,
His fall was the death knell of coercions grim display,
Then brave men toiled and wrought and wise men wrote and taught,
But those who hardest fought were the men of Knockmonlea.
VI
These thoughts and others too within my heart held sway,
While softly fell the dew oer starwatched Knockmonlea,
And shone the pale moons light on valley and on height
While flew the sparklets bright from the forge at Knockmonlea.
