twenty five years of age. It is never remembered around here that the people never wore boots. in their lives. It is the custom around here for the children to go barefooted in the end of Spring or in Summer. Long ago a woman used go to the Red forge for bread and she used run it there barefooted though frost and snow. Long ago when the people were going to town they would carry a pair of boots under their arms and when they would be a mile or so outside the town they would put on their boots. When they would get a mile outside the town they would take off their boots again and walk barefooted home. There is a part of the boot called a taoibhín which the shoe maker mends when it is broken. The water the feet is washed in should be thrown away because it is said that it is unlucky to have it in the house for the night. Shoes were never made in this locality but there is a shoemaker who mends them. Long ago leather was tanned around here. Rógáinn and taoibin and boragaine are the old names for the pieces that are put in the boots. Clogs are made from bo gelder[?] Rógáinn is the old name for the thing used for sewing the boots. Clogs are worn in this district very often. They are bought in Youghal. The skin of the eel was used long ago for making fongs. Long ago the hide of an animal used be cut into long strips and put around the legs.
