People sometimes help each other in sowing potatoes. A neighbouring farmer might help another at drawing manure or opening drills. When the stalks are up above the ground they are trenched. The furrows are ploughed and the earth is thrown up on the stalks so that the frost would not burn them. They are sprayed in the beginning of July The spray misclure is made up of washing soda and bluestone.
In the Autumn the potatoes are dug out with spades and women pick them. They are put into pits. At first the potatoes are put in a big heap, then rushes is put on them and earth. Epicures, Irish Queens, Kerr Pinks, Aran Victors, Golden Wonders and Banners are the commonest potatoes grown in this district. Kerr Pinks are the best grown potatoes.
