- The name of our Townland is Keale, situated in the Parish of Athea and District of Newcastle West, barony of Shannid. There is a stream running convenient to our house which is partly the source of the river Oola. A little further eastward at the head of the source are two or three great caves or holes which are called in Irish "Puilleacha Báidhte " or the " drowning holes ". Those caves or holes are rather remarkable as they look to be encased with what appears to be rough mason work and stranger still this spot is supposed to be the source of two other rivers, larger thatn the Oola, namely the Gale and the Aulicánn.Some of the older people in the townland tell us that poteen was made long ago at the place where these holes are to be seen at present.
