The Glebe, Ardagh.The buacalan is the most harmful weed growing on our farm. The buacalan is most harmful, because it spreads quickly. The thistle is also a very harmful weed. If they are not cut or pulled, there will be double the amount the next year.The thistle and the buacalan grow in rich land. The blackheads grow in poor land. The dandelion and the comphrey have medicinal properties. The dandelion is used as a cure for liver disease. The comphrey is used to cure sprains and hurts. The root of it is scraped and made into pulp and put up to the affected part. The house-leek is a plant that grows on a thatched house. It was used as a cure for sore or cracked lips. The juice of the leaf is applied to the lip.It was believed by the old people that the house on which the house-leek grew would never be burned. It is supposed to be very lucky to find a four leafed shamrock, and while it is in your possession, if you wished for anything, your wish would be granted.
