- Mary O'Connor,
The Commons,
Ardagh.Leipreachan.The little leipreachan is known locally as geanncan(?). He is about five inches in height. His usual occupation is shoemaking. Stories are told of people who caught him, but they did not succeed in getting the gold. Leipreachans are looked upon as friendly beings. One night a man went out between eleven and twelve o'clock, and not far away from him, he heard a sound like the ticking of a watch. He came near the place where he heard the sound, and saw there a leipreachan. He caught hold of him, and said he would not let him go, until he would get the gold. Then, "Look at that behind you", said the leipreachan, "Mind for fear he would bite you". The man looked and as soon as he did the leipreachan was gone.Told to me by my mother.
