  2. VI. It is believed that St. Patrick, when passing by Clouncagh, came to Castlemahon parish and there dedicated the holy well to St. John the Baptist. The pattern day is the 29th August because St. John was beheaded on that day. People pay rounds at the well and say a rosary each time. If the rounds are paid before sunrise, and if the fish appears in the water the person paying the rounds will be cured of any disease he has. The spring rises from a rock. There is a statue of St. John erected at the well.
