    The following verses were written in 1922 by T.D. Shanahan a native of Rathcahill Monagea. He is now in California.
    I oft feel sad and lonely here, out in the Golden West,
    When I recall the olden times and fond hearts laid to rest,
    The gladsome crowd, at gloaming hour, the stars a-peeping down
    And all the meadows robed in green around Newcastle Town.
    And oftentimes I think I see that dear old place again.
    As through the misty maze of time 'pears ev'ry strret and lane
    The Arra stream, where sparkling depths mirrored night's jewelled crown,
    And kissed the daisied, winding banks' long-side Newcastle Town.
    In dreams I hear the thrushes sing, tho'far, so far away -
    As oft I heard them warbling in blest childhood's happy day;
    The pleasant shades and sunlit glades with hazel nuts so brown
    Were favoured haunts for schoolboy trysts close by Newcastle Town.
    The fairy nooks and sylvan dells, bedeck'd with blossoms gay,
    The rustic seat, whose mem'ries sweet shall never fade away,
    And who should blame me if, perchance, a tear-drop trickles down
    While musing thus upon the past and loved Newcastle Town.
