    Four of the houses are thatched and the others are slated. Con Ward is the only man who is over seventy years and he is a great storyteller. Houses were numerous in former times and about twenty of them are in ruins in Ballyvareen. The land is arable and good for growing crops.
    There are only two hills in this townland and no wood because they were cut down in olden times. There are no lakes in Ballyvareen only a few streams. Many people went from this townland to other Countries and that is why the population decreased so much.
