- The oldest school in the parish of Pallaskenry was kept by Mr Hanly who lived in the townland of Ballynolan in the parish of Pallaskenry, County Limerick; date about 1820Later, in the year 1845, a school was held by Mr. Crowley in Curraheen Pallaskenry, where children learned to read and write. In those days teachers were very particular about spelling, and what was known as the spelling book, was spoken of until quite recently by the old people. Other books were the Primer, Sequel No 1 and 2.Children of illiterate parent were usually hard to teach, and sometimes the teacher, who was always called the schoolmaster, would have to liken the letters with objects such as, a hurley meaning a J, the back of a chair H, and a crook for an S, and so on. Also teachers who were usually self appointed were in the habit of trying to best one another. For instance a teacher would write a letter written in the highest English, at his command which was usually answered in the same, and(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
